Does Your Child Need Braces?
Indications for orthodontic treatment in the primary or mixed dentition
Many parents ask us what to look out for in their growing child and when they should contact us.
The first orthodontic consultation is advised to be performed at the age of 7.
We normally do not need to start this early on, but there are a few indications where a child would benefit from early orthodontic treatment.
These are briefly:
-
Decay and/or early loss of primary (baby) teeth
-
Thumb or dummy sucking after the age of 4
-
Mouth breathing (adenoids, snoring, “tired face”, allergic reactions and asthma are some indicators)
-
Open mouth in resting position (either because the front teeth are sticking out or because the muscle tone is weak)
-
Prominent teeth or pain in the palate (gum) while biting
-
Teeth in crossbite (upper teeth behind lower teeth)
